The fee, before the first call

Each job below has one flat fee, set by what the job involves and quoted in writing before I start. It lists what’s in it and what isn’t. If your matter doesn’t fit one of these, I quote a flat fee for it first, and I never bill by the hour for them.

  • Name check

A search and a written read before you commit to a name.

    • Search of the federal and state registers
    • Search of the open web and app stores
    • A written opinion and a 30-minute video call
    • Filing the application
    • Government fees
    Term:
One flat fee per name, quoted in writing
  • Trademark filing

    Most asked for

Your name or logo, filed and followed to the office’s decision.

    • Application written and filed
    • Routine emails from the office
    • Updates at every step
    • Response to a refusal
    • USPTO filing fee
    Term:
One flat fee per class, quoted in writing
  • Copyright registration

One finished work, or a set the rules let us file together.

    • Ownership check
    • Application and deposit prepared
    • Filing and receipt
    • Copyright Office fee
    • Suing someone who copied it
    Term:
One flat fee per work or set, quoted in writing

The USPTO and the Copyright Office set their own fees and change them. I quote the current amount in writing and pass it through at cost, on top of my flat fee.

About paying me

Do I pay anything before we agree?

The first video call is free and short. I tell you whether I’d take the job and which price applies. You pay only after you accept a written quote.

When do I pay?

The flat fee is due when you accept the quote, and the government’s fee is paid when I file. Both are on the quote, so there’s nothing to add up later.

What if the office refuses my application?

A reply to a refusal is its own flat fee, quoted before you decide. I tell you what I think our chances are before you decide whether to pay for one.

What if the job turns out bigger than we thought?

I tell you before I do any extra work, with a flat price. You can say no, and the work you already paid for stays done.

Send the name or the work. I’ll write back with the exact fee, the government’s fee and the first step.
